silly school...graduation is not an option!

So I pick up Kathryn from her 2nd day as a Freshman in high school. She gets into the car and announces to me "Hey mom, today I made a commitment to graduate!" My response "good!" She then replied "like it was an option! huh?"

This got me to thinking...(uh oh) Since when does graduating become an option? I'm gonna assume most kids when entering high school are under the impression that graduation is a must. It's the way out of High school and into the world. On to the next stage. So why? why? why? would the system that's trying to get them to that ultimate goal of achieving a high school diploma thus graduating plant a seed that another option exist. I have to wonder how many kids had a light bulb moment - I don't have to do this.

I know not every one succeeds in completing high school. I know school isn't for all. (so they think) However perhaps instead of planting the seed that it's not an option the approach is a more positive one. 720 days remain in your career as an Oak Hill Eagle. 720 days until you've completed a 12 year task and are ready to embark on the next phase in your life. 720 days and you WILL be a GRADUATE! You started on this adventure 1,620 days ago! and you're almost done.

My daughter knew graduation wasn't an option rather a step necessary in order for her to continue pursuing her dream of becoming... the best she can be.

age isn't just a number

I don't mind getting older. I just don't want to look older. Now I'm not talking a need to stop wrinkles for I think they add character. What I'm talking about is looking old, frumpy...coming across like "older" people do. Aesthetically the only thing I do to avoid the aged look is color my hair. I personally just am not a fan of salt/pepper look on women. Call me sexist but for men, well I think it's kinda hot. Now, if I could be all white haired that would be okay! It's a pretty look.

I don't want to ever wear Velcro closure shoes especially in taupe. I don't want my boobs anywhere near the waist band on my pants. I hope to never shop from the inserts in the Sunday paper coupon section. No matter how cool or comfortable the product promises to be. I hope to never look at "today's teens" and shake my head in disgust.
I hope to have conversations that have substance and humor.

I think growing old should be as exciting and fun (albeit somewhat more painful)as growing up was. Think about it. We've achieved the biggies: drivers license, 18, drinking age, and before too long we'll approach the age of reward! Sr. citizen discounts! Sr. rewards!!!! ahhh I can't wait. I'm not even a fan of shopping but just knowing that if I shop on a particular day of the week I'm in for an additional savings...count me in! woot woot!

So, here's to growing older and keeping "it" together without morphing into an old person.

Gods amazing plan!

One of the things I always ask God for is to remember things that have happened to me in the past. And time and time again He has reveled Himself to me by answering my prayer request. The funny thing is in the moment we don't always know how words, people, situations will ultimately affect our life. Many times I've found myself replaying in my mind words that were spoken. Many times I've been overly aware of what is going on around me. And many times I've been privy to information that at the time I wondered WHY?

Years ago as I was going through my divorce from my first husband I was attending church with some friends of mine at the Converse Church of Christ. I drove all the way from Fairmount to attend with them. Because of the distance I worshiped with people I didn't really know. It was fine with me that I didn't know them I knew my friends and the pastor had reached out to me. One Sunday sermon in particular stood out to me. The pastor had asked a member of his congregation to join him at the front. This person was to be an unwed mother. And he called up on the congregation to support her choice to be an unwed mother. Reminding us we were all part of the family/body of Christ and we're to be there for each other. Also reminding each of us that no one in there was with out sin.

Fast forward to summer of 2010 july 3rd. I invited my friend and her kids to join me at my mothers house for a cookout and fireworks. Usually we only see each other at sporting events for her son. It was a great time to be with her and the kids and to get to know her a bit better. I first came to know her children, her oldest son in particular who when he was in jr. high had tutorial with me. When he went on to HS his sister also had tutorial with me. Although discouraged by the school, this family became very special to me. They welcomed me into their life as we did them into ours. I had been warned many times to not fraternize with my students and their families. However this was one rule I just couldn't obey.

So, back to july 3rd 2010...my friend and I were talking about church, sermons, moments, God sightings etc...I was sharing with her moving times I had experienced while in attendance at the CCC and what a wonderful pastor I thought pastor Wheeler was. As we were having our discussion my mind went back to the sermon mentioned above about the single mother, her choice to raise her children and the call to the congregation to support and lift up her and her children as they grow in the body of Christ.

And now for the God moment....my friend was that lady and her children were those we were called to love, support, and lift up. I was there that day, sitting up stairs in a pew, unnoticed yet touched, an outsider to a community that I only ventured into on Sunday mornings. But I was there. I heard the pastors words, I sensed the fear and anxiety in the mother and even sensed some shame among the congregation. I never heard a name and didn't really focus on what the young lady looked like because through my own tears she was a blur.

Since that day that sermon stuck. I became a parent myself. I became a part of the Oak Hill community. And by the grace of God I was put where I needed to be. I became connected to this family. They are like my own. God knew all along. He had me right where He needed me. I love when He does that!

Saturday...Hello Weekend!

Well, week 1 back to school 2010-2011 done only 35 weeks left to go. And I must say I am a bit optimistic. What a nice feeling. The sports season opened last night also. Oak Hill Eagle football in a scrimmage against Taylor. Zach Powell had a nice 60yd reception for a TD and my boy Caleb G. tore up the field with some awesome carries. Proud of them and all the team. Cheerleaders were manning the concession stand. Great turn out and willingness to help. Thanks girls.

I had the opportunity to catch up with an old friend from Kathryn's dancing days. So enjoyed our conversation. In conversing she shared with me some concerns on her hart, so I'd like to ask for prayer for her and her family. Also, she spoke of a disappointing experience in transitioning to Oak Hill. So frustrating for them and even for me as a tax payer and parent who's involved.(much to their chagrin perhaps) Here's the thing...RULES, GUIDELINES, in place for many reasons, safety, decision making, clarity, etc.... They are expected to be followed by students, staff, parents alike. HOWEVER, it becomes difficult to take those seriously when administration bends, and alters them. What's not okay for most/some becomes an exception for others. Really...is this the image we want? You think the left hand will never find out what the right hand is doing. You think since the decision was on the DL that it will remain. Come on! This is the kind of underhanded decision making that has given Oak Hill a negative image to many within this community and outside of it. If special exceptions are going to be made than every request to transfer should be considered as a special request. Now some will say it is however if we accept some who do not meet the requirements for transfer...than where do we draw the line? Good news is the OH experience as a whole out weighs the bad. Unfortunately it the bad that leads to frustration that tends to fuel conversation. Many times I've heard parents comment it's the families and students in this community that draw them in. We have a fine school system, not with out it's flaws but undoubtedly one of the best educations in grant county. I'm glad we're Eagles. Hopefully we'll represent well.

So working the concessions was a HOT HOT job! Crazy but fun. I do enjoy helping out & being around people. Yesterday I blogged a bit about Karma. You know what goes around comes around. Now obesity isn't a laughing matter. I've suffered from it for longer than I would've liked for the last 10 years it's been a part of my make up. I remember once when subbing for geometry some girls were talking at the end of class about their weight, dieting, having babies in the future etc...and the general consensus was "I'll never get fat." "And I'm totally gonna lose all my baby weight when I have kids because there's no reason not to" This last statement really hit home with me because the young lady that said it directed it at me. In a very judgmental tone she made the statement letting me know that what I had morphed into was completely unacceptable. Fast forward 5 years. After graduating HS, marriage & 1 child she has herself morphed into what she declared she would never be. In general this young lady is not a happy go lucky type. Rather she is some what miserable. I can only imagine the personal hell she's in now. Sad really as many would think she has the world. (job, home, husband, kid) I saw her last night again...and couldn't help but want to ask her what her take on it now was. I do believe she has surpassed me. :( (karma)

Happy weekend every body! Prayers for my friend Cindy & her family & Dawn. Thanks & I'm out!

and another thing...

Ms. Teacher: In addition to many students suffering from A.D.D. it's possible that the following factors might also contribute to their NOT being able to focus on what you are saying: 1. Nipple Hard-ons. If this is a chronic condition perhaps a padded bra is necessary 2. The hair growing from the mole on your lip/face 3. The camel-toe you sport on a daily basis. (fyi, every year at back-to-school time you can usually score a FULL length mirror for $5 at wal-mart. They probably even sell reasonably priced pants in your size & Tweezers & Bras...it could be your one-stop shop to a successful school year!)

Mr. Teacher: If you want the ever abashed student to take you seriously perhaps you should NOT tell them on their 1st day in your class that you're NOT necessary to their education in the subject matter for which you've been hired to teach. For it is at this point in which you lose 90% of their attention and respect. They were sure to notice when selecting school supplies that NOTHING was needed for your classroom. Little did they know it was just a matter of time before they discovered they didn't even need you.

just saying...

177...

Friday the 13th and the 1st week of school is coming to an end. Thankfully it's been a good week. Matthew started football. He puked his 1st day at practice. I'm sure it won't be his last upchuck. He does seem to be enjoying it though. Kate has made the transition seamlessly. I'm not at all surprised. Matthew has too. woo hoo! It's another HOT day with crazy humidity...ICK! I didn't get my walk in today. Right Kidney is hurting and left foot is too. I've concluded flip flops are not my friend. OOOOOHHHHH how I love them so! what's a chubby chick to do?

I've been reading some of my favorite blogs and am slightly envious. I wish I had the kahunas to blog so candidly. I have typed up a few candid blogs...but just can't bring myself to hit the publish button. Why? you might ask. Well...for no other reason than I come off as a total Bitch. I don't think I am...90% of the time. But like a disgruntled flight attendant my buttons get pushed! Stupid will rear it's ugly head in and show itself in someone who gets put in my path and there are times when my attitude is less than pleasing to God! My behavior is certainly NOT what Jesus would do. I attribute this lapse in judgment succumbing to the things of this world. Being "in" it can inevitably get the best of anyone. As sad/offensive as some of my thoughts and behaviors are they are a part of what defines me. The good news is I don't share ALL my thoughts. (but oh how i would like to) However the bad news is I often feel like I need the release. (thank you andy for loving me in spite of it all & yay for the unpublished blogs!)

I've also decided that I too am fair game for criticism/bashing if need be. Coming to this conclusion has (in my opinion) given me the go ahead for stating my opinion on all things good, bad, ugly, and indifferent. So, here goes: Dear Mom of a particular set of athletes: Quit living vicariously through your kids. Staff are in place to make decisions best suited for the team perhaps you should support the staff and take your rightful place on the sideline and cheer on & support all participants. Less bitching just might make you tolerable to others...however I feel we'll never know. Dear former "friend" who gave me your bag of "fat" clothes because you no longer needed them: I saw you the other day at registration, did you want your clothes back? Ladies: boobs above the waistband of your britches please. They're far less distracting when they're (almost) where they belong. Men: shirts on if - 1)hair is anywhere other than chest area 2)6 pack is now a keg 3)you would spill out from an A cup

Good books I've read: (keep in mind several are for teens, as I spent 4 years reading material that jr. high girls would find interesting) Mother Daughter Book Club series; Secrets of my Hollywood life series; I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have To Kill You series; Clique series; Jen Lancaster's' Memoirs - BITTER IS THE NEW BLACK, BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG ASS, SUCH A PRETTY FAT, PRETTY IN PLAID, MY FAIR LAZY (in progress - NOT teen); & Wild Girls. So if you're looking for good quick reads or perhaps your daughter is you just might enjoy some of the above.

Well this is it for me ...for now. Kathy Lee & Hoda are on. Prayers today for my friend Dawn she's back in the hospital w/ a low white count. Thanks! Oh, & thanks for reading, feel free to share your comments & thoughts.

you touched our life...

Do you ever give much thought to the people who you come in contact with? Those who God has put in your path? I don't know that I ever did initially but you know what they say, hind sight is 20/20. I think as a parent I've been most aware of the people who have come in and out of the lives of my children. Teachers, Sunday school teachers, coaches, friends & their parents have all in some way or another touched the lives of my children and in some ways have had some sort of influence. I would like to name a few.

People who have influenced my daughters life: Mrs. Fleck - 1st grade teacher. She kept my daughter engaged in learning, reading and really lit a fire in her for education. 180 days of fun & learning in her class. As a parent I couln't be more thankful for her. I credit her for Kathryn's love of school. Mrs. Belcher - 7th grade advanced Lit. teacher. A shared appreciation for books and reading has taken Kathryn's' love of all things book related to a new level. Lisa tapped into creative thinking, challenged individual thought and thinking outside of the box. God for sure put Lisa into my daughters life at a time when she needed it most and answered my prayer by retuning her to instruct her freshman honors English class! In what can be considered a child's most formative years God placed 2 very creative, inspiring, strong women in my daughters life. I'm so grateful for the difference they have made and their influences.

People who have influenced my sons life: Tim Becker - Worship leader at Mt. Olive UMC. and adult leader with the youth. Tim has taken the "time" much needed in getting to know my son. He has taken the time to get to know his heart and continues to lead him to the Lord. He has believed in him when others who should've have not. He has helped him to rise above the "stuff" of this life and reminded him to keep his sights on a life that matters and is pleasing to the Lord. Matts teachers in 5th & 6th grade - ...the influences were not positive personal experiences yet my son came away from it all stronger, more confident, more sure and more empowered than he had ever been before. Matt sorted through all the negative that came at him, the disappointing attitudes of adults around him and decided the important thing was for him to like himself. 360 days later he has entered a new realm and he has a positive attitude and a new outlook and a new greater inspiration...God & himself.

178 but who's counting :)

Do I dare say it...the school year is off to a good start! woo hoo! Got tickled at my kids when I picked them up day one. Both were so proud of themselves because they REMEMBERED to get their home work. Upon arriving home they realized they only got PART of their homework. Problem solving skill put to use and they both managed to finish their assignments. That in itself is a success from years past! Day 2 was far more successful for getting needed items home so that homework could be completed. However Matthew didn't want to share with me what had been assigned and requested that I just trust him that he could handle it. Blind faith ...ON! Mornings have been good even. Every one has woke up on their own, hit the showers, clothing selections made and lunches packed! I think I'm living in a dream. :D

The good Lord granted me a beautiful day for my walk. It was nice to have companionship today. (thanks for joining Heather & Kim) It was nice to laugh and talk and not think about the aches my big old self was feeling. I said a prayer on my way to the train for my walk and asked that God ease my pain so that I might hold up while walking. He did just that. A part of me felt so silly asking for such a thing when so many others truly suffer yet He got me through just the same. PTL!

And now for my ramblings: I can't seem to get enough tomatoes! I've not had a coke or soda since july 25th ....well, other than the occasional sip that has happened 3x's (huge accomplishment for me) More over I've not desired it...that my friends is a God thing! Jen Lancaster has become my favorite author. Stoked for some boilermaker football! Gummy smiles distract me. Bickering is unnecessary. Phones like roads go both ways. I miss my grandma and grandpa Stroup. I love living life and making memories and friends! - I think that's what defines me the most. My husband is admirable, my daughter is inspirational, my son is compassionate and I admire them all.

This is one HOT Thursday! Perhaps a dip in the pool should be the part of the plan today!

Until tomorrow. Now go make a difference today!

179 to go ...

Completely successful 1st day. Hopefully a standard has been set and the other 179 to follow will be the same. Too much to hope for?

Well awoke to storms this morning. I was in hope of joining a group of ladies to walk for 30 min. but the rain kept all away....except me. The Good Lord gave the much needed 30 min. window necessary for me to get in my walk. Matt's IPOD kept me entertained. Unfortunately alone with my thoughts isn't always a good thing. Man am I ever all over the place! I cracked myself just with random weird thoughts. I would be afraid to go to a shrink for fear I'd be committed. My worst nightmare not really the worst...)would be if suddenly the human race gained the ability to read minds.

Interesting, for a moment the sun looked like it was going to make an appearance today...the weather guy just showed the radar...rain headed out way & now the sky is BLACK and we're in for another round! wow! it's coming down hard!

I love the sound of laughter. And I do love laughing myself. Last night I began reading PRETTY IN PLAID by Jen Lancaster. This is the 4th book of hers I've read this summer. As I began reading chapter 1 the giggling ensued. Within moments it was all out laughter. Now keep in mind my husband was trying to sleep. Poor guy. Good thing our new mattress came and my shaking with laughter was less disturbing than it would've been had we been on our old mattress. (haha) However I couldn't suppress the sound of laughter and ....woke him up! (tee hee hee) Sorry Andy. Thanks Jen!

Pop tart world...really?!? & They have POP TART SUSHI! wow! chopped up pop tarts contained with a fruit roll up!

A shout out to my former students. Many of you inspired a recent blog...THANKS! I'm so thankful for each person God has brought into my life & put in my path. Even those who have left utterly frustrated...(you know who you are :P ) My heart has been touched.

List of love & thanks: My God, Husband, Kids, Friends, Church, Pool, Books, Youth group, Music, Storms, rafts, wind, family, health. The list is much longer but I'll list these today.

Prayers (please): my mom, brother & his family, dawn staggs, shirley, uncle howard.

more to come...

and they're off!

Well the much anticipated first day of high school and jr. high has arrived. I cannot believe my baby girl is starting her high school career and my boy jr. high. What a beginning to a period of time that goes way to fast. I'm afraid to blink.

I become so reflective this time of year. I see comments of facebook from kids who I've come to know through school. I tend to get teary eyed. Weather I was an Instructional Aide for them, a substitute teacher, or just an adult who managed to connect, I am so thankful for all of those RELATIONSHIPS! As taboo as my former employer wanted those to be the blessing they've brought to my life are unmeasurable.

For whatever reason there were connections made with kids that some educators deemed 'unreachable'. And the joy that has come with staying in touch, seeing them succeed, and being able to call them "friend" far exceeds any paycheck ever received!

I just saw a piece on the news about a 1st grade teacher spending her summer meeting her new students in their home, building relationships with their families...what an awesome thing. I'm unsure of her religious beliefs but I am sure of mine and God has a called us to build relationships.

I pray for this new school year healthy relationships are built. I pray that instead of focusing of differences people look for common ground. Daily YOU can choose to build someone up or tear them down...choose to build them up! Pray for those who you might find challenging and as for prayer for yourself as odd are you too are challenging to others. We're all alike in that manner. These principles are not just for the classroom & hallways but for all walks of life.

Choose not just to be different but to make a difference. I can only hope I have done just that!

what will the next 9 mos bring?

so many things going on in this life of mine. from a new way to eat and new opportunity, kids moving into new school building & growing up too fast, houses being remodeled and a long long way from being done and all the craziness that goes with the 180 days that encompass school, sports, holidays and vacations. and i'm excited.

reflections: God is good. over the course of the summer we've had some really good sermons. (much needed) and like any good sermon they got me thinking about...me and the blessing i have received. many many many. how humbling to think that He loves me so much in spite of my shortcomings, sins, intercessions, and imperfections. He has softened my heart. and i can't think of a time since having asked Him to be my Savior that i've not felt His presence. ahhhhh.
what peace. my biggest issue is that i don't feel i deserve any of it. i am oh so thankful, oh so humbled, and oh so blessed. how can you go through all of this life and all this world throws at you and not have the Lord leading the way? my prayer list grows daily for those who don't know the Lord. especially for teens who are fumbling their way through this world.

what an end to a great summer. we had such fun at lake day with our youth group. so many kids, with an awesome common thread, GOD! so excited for our new youth season.

well this is it for now...i'm distracted. but i'll return with a clearer head & more insight.

Say what you mean to say..... or not....

So do you have moments when your head says one thing and then through the process of the filter something totally different comes out of your mouth? Society, maturity and the whole 'if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all' mantra all are contributing factors to me often saying one thing while thinking another. Few are privy to the REALness of ME. It's kinda like living a duel existence. My thoughts usually are really quite funny. Unfortunately it's often at the expense of someone else. Since I fear most do not possess the ability to laugh at themselves I refrain. This often results in me laughing all alone and laughter is far more fun when shared.

My friend Heather has been privy to my inner ramblings. And thanks to her I was introduced to an author Jen Lancaster who I seem to relate to. She is the author of a series of memoirs that chronicle her life, her thoughts & opinions and they're sure to keep you working out your ABs as you flip from one page to another. Her blog is also enjoyable. http://www.jennsylvania.com/ If I didn't think I'd have to relocate and enter into the witness protection program I too would pen my thoughts with the hope of becoming a best selling author. One thing I will say regarding the writings of Ms. Lancaster, they seem to be sponsored by the letter "F". (lol)

If only EVERYONE shared my sense of humor.

ramblings

Van Ness Family reunion today! met Miss Maisey. what a cutie pie. matt was a bit discourage as every time he would look at her she would begin to cry. I think he finally got a smile out of her. had a great turn out. sad we couldn't have stayed longer but had to drive 2:45 N. to take the kids to church camp.

dropped matthew off 1st. he was a late arrival (b/c of reunion) so that wasn't sitting well with him. then kate was all in a hurry for us to leave him behind and get her to her location. i believe i saw tears in his eyes behind the sunglasses. his chin certainly indicated disappointment. unfortunately we were somewhat scurried off as they were serving supper and the counselors wanted to make sure he had something to eat. so w/o seeing his cabin, or anything we said our farewells and were on our way.

kate was next to be dropped off. she couldn't get out of the car soon enough. her and a friend are staying in "campus house" which is housing for 'singles' who are there w/o a larger church group. she's stoked to be a part of that because she likes to make new friends. already we've exchanged 8 text messages...lol. i wish matt could've kept his phone too i would've loved to stay in contact w/ him too. although he'll do much better i'm sure w/o the distraction.

latest read for me Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster. what a riot. i can relate to her in so many ways. her writing is very colorful at times but painfully honest i do believe. many of her accounts i find very relate-able.

thought of the day....boy am i gald i don't think i'm better/better off than another. what a burden this must be for some. today i was ....fortunate to be informed of someones take on how i spend my time. given the tone and facial expression of the person commenting it was obvious they felt some sort of....1) entitlement to even comment on the matter & 2) disdain for the choice i make. REALLY...????!!! well after the conversation i came away aware of two things 1) pity for them and the sense of superiority they must feel they have to maintain, perhaps is comes easily and 2) not only can i filter but i do indeed do it! lol i simply walked away and was happy to be done with my part of the conversing. so many other truly interesting people and so little time.

oh, on the way home from the camp drop offs we dined at Jimmy's in N. Webster. it's a one stop multi-purpose sort of hole in the wall joint. 3 doors to choose from for entry. door number 1 - carry out only. door number 2 - tavern side. door number 3 - family side. didn't realize there was a door number 3 until andy was directed that direction for bathroom purposes. lol. so on this fine sunday evening we dropped out kids of at church camp and dined at the local tavern. when i asked the waitress a question she asked if i was passing through. i explained we dropped the kids at church camp to which she exclaimed "Oh, my God! Lord i hope they have a good time" lol. ~ I hope they do too!

and now i'm home, i've blogged, facebooked and now will curl up w/ my book in hope of finishing it tonight so i can begin book #2.

reality....harsh at times yet also refreshing

So, while riding with my daughter last night she commented on a photo she had seen of her "crush" and a girl. Out of the blue she says "if that's the kind of girl he is interested in i'm better off with him not liking me because i am nothing like her." The reality here...sometimes the things we want so much are not quite what we would've hoped for. That is the sad part. The refreshing part is her realizing that compromising who you are, the values & morals you cherish are not options that can be altered. At the age of 14 she has far more wisdom than I ever did. (thank God!)

I wouldn't begin to brag about my parenting abilities but there have been times when either of my kids will make random comments on or about observations they have made of life around them and I think to myself "Praise be to God...they've got it!" Sometimes I've been left wondering if I've been to "open" with my past, thoughts, trials/tribulations, opinions etc.... But knowing how inquisitive kids/teens are I decided early on that I was going to provided as much fact and information as possible. Thought process....at least they're armed w/ the necessary knowledge and can make decisions in a somewhat educated manner. This method has been painful at times as I've had to fess up about my own mistakes, faults, and what have you. I think it's a mirror many adults don't look into when handing out the "rules" for their children. I took a risk allowing ME to be seen. I'm not a perfect mom, I wasn't a perfect daughter, girlfriend, wife, employee, etc...I am full of faults. I've made awful mistakes. I've lied, I've hurt people, I've been selfish, self-centered and mean. But those things don't define who I am or who I was. It's life.

Concerned that I'd been too open I asked my daughter about her thoughts on my choice to be "open"...her response: "oh, no! I'm glad you've been so honest. You made some really stupid choices and no way am I gonna be that dumb!" (woo hoo!!!!) Mission accomplished! She also reminded me she was glad I was her mom & was just the way I was. Nice! The reality, raising kids is hard. Being real with ourselves and our children at times just adds to the difficulty of it all. The upside, (IMO) honesty, the good, bad & ugly of it all can go a long way. Especially in being relate-able to kids.

Reality, I've got 2 great kids. Neither them or myself is perfect but I'm yet to meet anyone in this life who is. We are however works of God and as the saying goes "He's not fished with us yet".

4th weekend!

well, so much for blogging daily. (confessions of a slacker!)

June was crazy busy and seem to last forever yet come to a close all to quickly. Now it's the Holiday weekend I enjoy oh so much. I love that there's a holiday that brings an entire country together. I hope & pray people focus on the purpose of this holiday! ...aside from the fact it's my birthday! woo hoo! jk

Saturday my family will journey over to Fairmount to celebrate with family & friends at my moms traditional July 3rd celebration. I've not attended for the last 5 +- years because i've been out of town. Kinda looking forward to it this year. We will also be celebrating my great nieces birthday! Ella! she turned 1 at the end of June.

I'm going to look at this years birthday as a rebirth of me if you will. I've done what I needed to do regarding 'loose ends' in my life. and am moving on...as is. But more importantly ...better than ever. I've been blessed with awesome people in my life from my husband, kids, family - the replacements, church family, friends and etc... I can't think of anywhere that I go that I don't see a friendly face. I am truly blessed.

So here's to my Birthday! a new year and a new outlook! ...I better wear my shades!

Graduations

June is such a busy busy month. In years past it's always involved dance recitals however this year there was a reprieve in my family from those. Rummage and graduations have taken center stage this year. Having been involved in the schools for 13 years I've gotten to know many of the students and always receive several graduation and open house invitations. What a blessing to be remembered and what a blessing each child has been to my life. As I opened each invite I couldn't help but smile and remember each one and the impact they've had on my life. It's hard not to be excited about our future when I know that the day will come that these kids will be in charge if you will. There is hope. :) I'm excited for their future and hope to keep up with them.

My nephew was one of the many graduates of 2010. What a bittersweet senior year he's had. I so wish I could fully speak my mind on the situation that unfolded but I don't want to do any damage to what all is going on. The good news is ...today is a new day, high school is behind him and he has a future!

My dad came into town for his grandsons graduation and granddaughters wedding. You know the old adage, if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all... well, we both must have put that into play as there was no speaking, no acknowledgment, no hello's or good-byes. Nothing. I'm ok with that on my part, I've accepted my place (lack there of) in his life, but to not speak to his own grandchildren is beyond sad. Such is the relationship with my father.

Looking forward to SUMMER! with the rummage behind me (woo hoo-i hate that event) We'll be enjoying our family tradition this coming weekend at the Indiana/Kentucky All Star games. This year they're super special as Oak Hill's own Courtney Moses will be wearing number 1 and will lead the way for the girls! Super Awesome! This is always a fun day and time with family! VBS is just a week away and the kids and I are both helping with that this year! Then in July we'll get to spend a week away with Andy as he does his northern route. Although he'll be gone during the day we'll at least get to be with him in the evening! During that time we're hoping to visit a water park, hit the Indiana Dune beaches at Lake Michigan, and perhaps head into Chicago to Medieval Times. Who knows what all we'll get to do but the time away & together will be nice and needed. July 11 Sam & Michelle will be home with the baby so we'll get to meet the newest Van Ness! and we'll have the annual Van Ness reunion at Uncle Ralphs. Later that same day we'll head north to take the kids to church camp! I'm so excited for them to attend that this year. What an awesome opportunity to get to be with other Christians and worship the Lord!

School starts way too early (as usual). I hope to seize all the time to enjoy my kids and husband!

Here's to summer!

first of the summer holidays...done.

What a beautiful weekend we were blessed with in central Indiana. Temps were in the high 80's and the rain held off allowing most folks to enjoy the weekend to it's fullest. We spent our weekend going in different directions. Matt & I worked saturday evening at the chuck, Andy worked at the amboy house and I'm not sure what kate did as she was recovering. Sunday we went to church, lunch at la cha's and then a quick change of clothes and then to the Van Ness'. Ed and Matt grilled hamburgers & polish sausages and Emma Jean had prepared homemade potato salad, fresh strawberries and veggies & dip. YUM! The kids enjoyed riding their 4-wheelers, and we all participated in a rousing round of croquet. Ed was off to an early lead then Matt took over. I stayed right in the hunt for the win with Ed and Matt while Kate & Emma Jean brought up the rear. Kate traded her club for more 4 wheel'n and coaxed her dad to take her spot. Andy rolled through the course with a come from behind lead. Matt and Ed continued to battle it out for second with Matt taking the honors. Third came down to Ed & I but with numerous "chokes" Ed pulled out 3rd! Best come back ever goes to Emma Jean as she pulled away with a 4th place finish leaving me to take last place. The kids really enjoyed playing with grandma & grandpa.

The Indianapolis 500 was ran and Dario Franccini took the checkered flag. This was his 2nd win. The last lap was ran under the yellow flag.

Elves showed up to work in our front room Sunday night late. I woke up to a big difference made in our front room all in preparation for the remodel and rummage. Monday was spent continuing the work that needs to be completed. Or meal was a bit unconventional for memorial day but everyone seemed to want and enjoyed the chili!

Kids get out of school this week, Wednesday! I'm so excited. So ready for the end of the school year.

Summer...just a few weeks early

Wow have we had some hot beautiful days. It sure doesn't take this little state long to heat up! Now I do love the sun and it's warmth however I could do with out the humidity. It's been that way for me my entire life, perhaps a relocation is in order. What a busy time of year! School is coming to an end :) Memorial Day weekend is approaching and graduation open houses are being held not to mention the annual Swayzee Rummage. (fyi...there's got to be a better time for the rummage!)

As the year winds down my kids are just going through the motions. I don't remember a time when everyone has been so OVER school. The state has decided that our children need to be in the classroom 180 days to have a proper education however I'm not convinced of that. Pretty much they've all checked out! Not to mention the MIA teachers. Oh well...this too shall pass.

Yesterday I had lunch with my friend Heather. It was nice to go out, eat, & laugh. good times... I'm pretty sure I need to do that more often. Andy is still gone ...oh how I miss him when he doesn't come home. Work was crazy...next to nothing until 7p.m. then we filled up! I didn't get home until well after 11. (we close at 9:30) It was so hot and humid at the Chuck - temp set at 64 degrees and it never fell below 83!

I have our end of the year kids hope party today. I'm so glad it's going to be over. I'm realizing I like endings. With that said I'll end this entry!

the love of a parent...

So here's my take. For as complicated as love is it is in its simplest form when you become a parent. From the moment your baby is born the very instant you lay eyes upon your child it is love. Love, simple and pure, uncomplicated, unconditional, automatic love. It doesn't necessarily mean your love for your partner is greater, deeper or more solid. The child isn't a band-aid for life, love and adult relationships. It's just a child, a part of you and another who if you're the parent suddenly consumes your heart.

Now I can only speak of my personal experiences regarding the birth of my babies who are now 12 & 14 years old. And I can honestly say my love for them has grown daily. Who would've thought it possible. They have made me laugh and cry. They've brought joy & disappointment. They have angered me, sadden me and at the same time brought about a happiness I never thought I would know or imagined existed.

As a child, teen and adult I had many different feelings regarding my own parents. I adored my father and struggled to find an appropriate feeling for my mother. Growing up she had my brother and I had dad. In return from my parents I felt everything from loved and adored by one to tolerated at best by the other. My self often feeling as though I didn't belong with my own family. I questioned it so often it became kind of a family joke. It's not a joke. I'm not adopted. I have to admit my feelings are mixed on this fact.

At this point in my life my relationships with my parents are....not what I would call ideal. I accept my part in them being what they are. What I don't get is how a parent ....chooses not to parent. How do you stop being involved. How do you stop? How do you allow others to replace the original? The child learns to love. It doesn't come into this world automatically loving rather it comes in needing. Love is taught by our parents. With that said, I feel extra blessed to have been able to love and be loved. I feel like I've conquered something.

These are just my opinions, takes, whatever...questions, feelings and all that good stuff. I get sad at times for what I don't have. And the memories of what once was are fading and often just don't even seem real. I'm still trying to figure out some parts and how to cope with one of the relationships and my part in it while feeling a complete and total loss with the other. I wonder if my parent feels the same? But the answer becomes clear with each day that passes without any contact. And with today's technology that hurts even more.

I'm so lucky to be a parent. To Love and be loved by my children I can only be excited for the days that lay ahead and the chance to love them even more.
